Laying out a thesis is precision work: every university has its own rules, and every starting file has its own problems. Here's what we check, fix and verify before sending it to print.
Margins and page setup
Correct margins for your university's binding. Inner gutter so the binding doesn't eat into the text. A4 format, or as your rules require.
Consistent fonts
The same font family throughout the thesis. Consistent sizes for headings, subheadings and body text. No random mix of Times, Calibri and Arial, which happens all too often.
Automatic table of contents
Generated from Word styles, not typed by hand. Page numbers always correct, even after last-minute edits.
Page numbering
Title page unnumbered, table of contents in Roman numerals, chapters in Arabic. Sections handled properly so you don't get "Page 1" restarting at every chapter.
Images and tables
Alignment, numbered captions, list of figures and list of tables generated automatically. We handle images that "jump" from one page to another.
Notes and bibliography
Footnotes or endnotes as required. Bibliography sorted by author, with the correct citation style (Harvard, APA, Chicago, ISO 690, MLA).
The problems we see most often
After 20 years working with students in Rome, we already know what to look for. Wrong or uneven margins: the binding eats 1-2 cm on the left side, but almost everyone forgets to account for it. We fix it with margins set correctly for the specific binding.
Mixed fonts across chapters: especially if you copied bits from PDFs or websites, the file ends up with 4-5 different fonts blended together. We standardise everything to the main font. Hand-made table of contents: every time you edit a page the numbers stop matching. We rebuild it with Word's automatic feature, so it always stays correct.
Tables running past the margin: pasted from Excel, they spill off the page. We reformat them to the correct width or rotate them to landscape where needed. Inconsistent bibliography: every entry in a different style. We standardise it to the style your department requires (Harvard, APA, Chicago, ISO 690, MLA).
