Why look at it first

On screen you read a thesis one page at a time, top to bottom. Bound, you read it two pages at a time, left and right, and that is where the surprises show up: a title page that lands on the left, a chapter starting on the back of a sheet, a landscape table upside down, a blank page in the wrong place. They take five minutes to fix in the file and a reprint once they are on paper.

The preview shows you the thesis in its final form before you order it, with the same rules we use at the counter: page 1 on the right, even pages on the left, the blank back where there is one.

Double-sided or single-sided: what changes

  • Sheets. Double-sided puts two pages on every sheet, single-sided one. A 160-page thesis is 80 sheets in the first case and 160 in the second.
  • Thickness and cover. The hardcover is chosen by sheets: that 160-page thesis takes the 10 mm cover double-sided and the 20 mm one single-sided. The tool tells you for yours.
  • How it reads. Double-sided reads like a book, with facing pages. Single-sided always leaves the left-hand page blank, which some people like because it leaves room for the supervisor’s notes.
  • Limits. A hardcover binds up to 295 pages single-sided and up to 590 double-sided.

Before you choose, check your course rules: some universities ask for one or the other. If they say nothing, past 100-150 pages double-sided is the more practical choice.

Double-sided rules in a nutshell

  • Odd pages sit on the right. Page 1, the title page, is the first you see when you open the cover.
  • The back of the title page is usually left blank, so the contents, dedication and introduction start on the right again.
  • If you want every chapter to start on the right, each chapter has to begin on an odd page: when the previous chapter ends on an odd page, you need a blank page in between. The preview shows it at a glance.
  • The inner margin swaps sides. Binding takes 1-2 cm near the fold: double-sided, that fold is on the left of odd pages and on the right of even ones. Word handles it with mirror margins.

If the file is not ready yet (margins, fonts, contents, numbering), we can fix it for you: see our thesis layout service.

What the tool checks

  • The closed cover with your PDF’s title page pressed in, in the colour and lettering you pick from those available.
  • Facing pages as they come out of the binding, double-sided or single-sided.
  • Sheets and cover thickness for both ways of printing.
  • Format: it flags pages that are not A4 and landscape pages, which you read by turning the bound book.
  • The single-sided limit, if the thesis is too long to print that way.

The PDF is never uploaded: the preview is built inside your browser and disappears when you close the page. If you also have to submit the thesis digitally, you can check the file with our free PDF/A checker.

Thesis preview: frequently asked questions

How can I see my bound thesis before printing it?

With the tool above: open your PDF and flip through it as facing pages, like a book, first with the closed cover and then page by page. Switch between double-sided and single-sided printing and see what changes straight away. The file stays on your computer.

Should I print my thesis double-sided or single-sided?

It depends on your course rules and on how long the thesis is. Double-sided halves the sheets: the thesis is thinner, lighter and reads like a book. Single-sided leaves the back of every sheet blank, which some supervisors like for notes. If the rules say nothing, past 100-150 pages double-sided is the more practical choice.

Does the title page have to be on the right in double-sided printing?

Yes. In a book odd pages sit on the right and even pages on the left: page 1, the title page, is the first one you see when you open the cover, on the right. Its back (page 2) is usually left blank, so the table of contents or the dedication starts on the right again.

Why are there blank pages in the preview?

In single-sided printing every sheet has a blank back, so the left-hand page is always empty: that is normal and it is how the printed thesis looks. In double-sided printing, if the page count is odd, the last page has a blank back. If you see blanks you did not expect, now is the time to fix the file.

Does the cover thickness change between double-sided and single-sided?

Yes, because the hardcover is chosen by sheets, not pages. A 160-page thesis printed double-sided is 80 sheets and takes the 10 mm cover; single-sided it is 160 sheets and needs the 20 mm one. The tool tells you which thickness you need in both cases.

Is my PDF uploaded or read by anyone?

No. The preview is built inside your browser: the file is not sent to any server, ours included. When you close the page nothing is left.

How many pages can be bound?

With a hardcover, up to 295 pages single-sided and up to 590 double-sided. If your thesis is longer than the single-sided limit, the tool flags it and suggests double-sided printing.
