IED thesis printing: what to know

IED — Istituto Europeo di Design — is an international network founded in 1966, today with campuses in Milan, Rome, Turin, Florence, Cagliari, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and New York. The Rome campus, opened in 1973, is spread across three neighbourhoods (San Giovanni, Pigneto, Testaccio) with over 60 three-year courses, master's programs and continuing education across the four Schools: Design, Visual Arts, Fashion and Communication.

From GUUG it's 6 km to the main campus at Via Casilina 47: 22 minutes by car via Lungotevere/Termini/Re di Roma. We print around 60 IED portfolios and theses a year, with an interesting mix: technical boards for Design, lookbooks for Fashion, photobooks for Photography, magazines for Communication. The international IED network brings us students from all over Italy and abroad for graduation season.

On this page you'll find GUUG's services tailored to the four IED Schools, the three campuses with exact distances from us, and answers to the questions IED students regularly ask at our counter — many of them Italian students back from exchange terms at other campuses in the IED network.

IED Rome is spread across three campuses: the School of Design at Via Casilina 47 (00182, San Giovanni), the School of Visual Arts at Via Alcamo 11 (00182, Pigneto), and the Schools of Fashion and Communication at Via Giovanni Branca 122 (00153, Testaccio). From GUUG, the Via Casilina campus is the closest (6 km, 22 min by car), while Testaccio is the easiest by public transport (5 km, metro B Piramide). Pigneto is reachable by metro A to Termini + metro B to Pigneto.

Frequently asked questions

What cover colour do IED students use for their portfolio?
IED brand red is the most requested choice for portfolios and theses: it's instantly recognisable at your defense and in job interviews, because it aligns your portfolio with the visual identity of the international IED network. Lettering is in gold or black. That said, some students choose brand-specific colours for projects with a strong identity of their own (e.g. Fashion Design with a collection palette) or stick with classic minimalist black.
I study Transportation Design — can I print my renders in large format?
Yes, it's one of our most technical jobs. Transportation Design renders on a large-format plotter up to B0 (1000×1414 mm), on 200gsm matte or glossy paper for brilliant colour rendering. The boards are numbered, organised by section (3/4 view, front, side, interior details), and delivered in a rigid folder for transport to your thesis defense. For the final portfolio we add a hard-cover copy in IED red.
IED Photography requires high-quality photobooks: what do you offer?
For Photography we do professional fine art printing: cotton paper (Hahnemühle, Canson) for painterly projects and classic fine art, matte baryta for a neutral rendering with a wide colour gamut, pearl gloss for commercial and fashion photography. We also print bound photobooks with a hard cover and direct-to-cover printing, in custom formats (30×30 square, 21×30 landscape, 35×25 panoramic).
I'm on Erasmus at IED Madrid: do you ship to Spain too?
Yes, we ship all over Europe with tracked couriers. For IED students on mobility at other campuses in the network (Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro) we handle international shipping of the final portfolio: 3-5 working days within Europe, 7-10 days outside Europe. Printing times stay the same (24-48h for the hard cover).
How much does the final IED portfolio cost?
It depends on the number of pages, the format (A4, A3, custom), the type of printing (fine art or standard), the binding (hard cover, saddle stitch, spiral) and any separate large-format boards. For an instant quote use the configurator at shop.guug.it/tesi, or drop by the shop: in 5 minutes we'll look at your files and give you an exact quote.
How much does it cost to print a thesis?
Thermal binding starts at € 8, the hardcover from € 25; printing is € 0.05 per side in black and white and € 0.40 in colour. The exact price depends on pages, copies and finishing — you can calculate it with our configurator.
