Your degree grade, worked out in a minute
Enter your exam grades and CFU: the calculator works out the weighted average and converts it to a grade out of 110. Then add the thesis points and bonuses your course awards and see the estimated final grade, or the average you need to reach 110. Your grades stay on your device.
Work out your degree grade
The calculation runs in your browser: your grades are not sent anywhere.
Thesis points, bonuses, cum laude value and rounding are set by your degree course regulations: enter its values.
Enter at least one grade with its CFU, or your average.
You need an average of at least 30.00. Calculated without rounding: with rounding a little less may be enough.
How the Italian degree grade is calculated
1. The weighted average. Each grade is multiplied by the CFU (credits) of its exam; the results are added up and divided by the total CFU. So a 12-CFU exam weighs twice as much as a 6-CFU one. Example: 28 in a 6-CFU exam, 24 in a 9-CFU one and 30 in a 12-CFU one give (28×6 + 24×9 + 30×12) / 27 = 27.56. Pass/fail exams with no grade usually do not count towards the average, and neither do the thesis CFU.
2. The starting grade. The average out of 30 is converted to a grade out of 110 by multiplying it by 110 and dividing by 30: 27.56 gives a starting grade of 101.04. This formula is used across Italy.
3. Thesis points and bonuses. At graduation the board adds points for the thesis and its defence, and many courses award bonuses, for instance for graduating on time, for cum laude grades or for Erasmus. The maximum points, which bonuses exist and how cum laude counts in the average are not set by a national rule: your degree course regulations decide, and they differ even between courses at the same university.
4. Rounding and cum laude. The total is rounded to a whole number, usually to the nearest. If it goes above 110, the board can award cum laude (110 e lode), usually by unanimous vote: the calculator stops at 110 and tells you so.
From average to starting grade
The starting grade for each whole-number average, before thesis points and bonuses. For averages with decimals, use the calculator above.
| Average (out of 30) | Starting grade (out of 110) |
|---|---|
| 18 | 66 |
| 19 | 69.67 |
| 20 | 73.33 |
| 21 | 77 |
| 22 | 80.67 |
| 23 | 84.33 |
| 24 | 88 |
| 25 | 91.67 |
| 26 | 95.33 |
| 27 | 99 |
| 28 | 102.67 |
| 29 | 106.33 |
| 30 | 110 |
Starting grade = average × 110 / 30.
Where to find your course rules
The rules you need to complete the calculation are in your degree course's regolamento didattico (teaching regulations) or in a dedicated prova finale (final exam) regulation, published on the department or course website, usually in the graduation section. Look for four things: the maximum thesis points, the bonuses available, the value of cum laude in the average and the rounding rule. If anything is unclear, ask the segreteria didattica (student office): theirs is the only answer that applies to your case.
While you wait for graduation, the thesis needs formatting and printing: there is a free Word template already set up for binding, a guide to the table of contents and a title page generator.
