Why a bilingual menu pays off for Rome restaurants

Rome is one of the world's top tourist destinations. In 2024 alone Italy welcomed over 50 million foreign tourists, and Rome captures a significant share of that flow, especially in the area between the Vatican, Castel Sant'Angelo, Piazza Navona and Trastevere. Industry studies say that more than 50% of foreign tourists list, among the problems of their Italian holiday, the very difficulty of reading restaurant menus. For a venue working with international tourism, a clear menu in English (and perhaps in other languages too) is no small detail: it directly changes what the customer orders, how much they spend and how they later describe the meal.

The QR-code digital menu, which many SaaS providers pitch as the only solution, works in some contexts but doesn't solve everything. Many tourists — especially couples over fifty, families with children, pilgrims — still prefer a paper menu in front of them, laminated, to browse calmly while the wine arrives. For them the bilingual paper version is simply more comfortable to read. And for the Italian restaurateur it's the easiest to manage: once printed, it lasts months, needs no connection, doesn't ask the customer for a Wi-Fi password, and never runs out of battery.

GUUG has been printing bilingual paper menus for tourist restaurants in central Rome since 2005. We're at Via di Porta Castello 29, between Castel Sant'Angelo and St Peter's Square, right in the heart of the city's densest tourist-restaurant area. Our in-house design studio handles the layout, the double column or the Italian-English mirror pages, the allergen labelling per EU Regulation 1169/2011, and consistency between the two-language items. You prepare the translation (or a trusted translator does): we don't translate, but we know how to lay it out well so no meaning is lost between the two columns.

Bilingual menu formats we set up

Depending on the number of dishes, the type of venue and how many languages you need, we choose the format that works best on your restaurant's table.

A4 double column

Italian on the left, English on the right on the same page. Works if you have 15-30 dishes. Compact, legible, perfect for pizzerias and trattorias with a fixed menu.

A4 mirror pages

Separate pages: Italian on the left, English on the right. More elegant than the double column, ideal for traditional and gourmet restaurants with dishes that need longer descriptions.

A3 two-panel fold

Open it's A3 (4 A4 pages), closed it's A4 on the table. One side in Italian, one in English. Plenty of room for descriptions and photos. Professional look, contained cost.

Multilingual 3+

Italian + English + Spanish or French or German or Chinese. Layout in 3-4 columns or a folded booklet. For restaurants in very high tourist-traffic areas (Vatican, Trevi, Pantheon).

Hardcover booklet

Book-style, hardcover with replaceable inner pages. Italian + English (+ separate wine list). For premium-level restaurants or trendy cocktail bars.

Separate bilingual wine list

It's often better to keep the Italian + English wine list separate from the food menu: wines, sizes and prices are clearer. Booklet or fold, laminated or not depending on the style.

What we do NOT do (and what we do instead)

To be clear about the boundaries of the service. We know many restaurateurs arrive with doubts on this point, so we put our cards on the table right away.

We don't translate the dishes for you

You prepare the translation, or a trusted translator does (a native English speaker, ideally with experience of Italian cuisine). Translating gricia, carbonara, guanciale is a craft in itself: we've seen Google Translate get it wrong too many times. If you need it, we can recommend specialist translators who often work with restaurants in the centre.

We lay out consistent Italian + English

You send us the two already-translated dish lists (even in Word or Excel) and we lay them out: double column or mirror pages, section hierarchy aligned across the two languages, allergens shown for each dish per EU Reg. 1169/2011, prices always in the same column, fonts legible even for customers whose eyesight isn't perfect.

We don't handle the QR-code digital menu

We aren't Menutech, Dishcovery, Stello or Qromo: those are software services that help you build and update an online digital menu. They're useful for certain venues (osterias with a daily menu that changes every day). We print on paper, and that works better for restaurants with a more stable menu.

We print, we laminate, you pick up

Printing on durable stock (laminated, water-repellent synthetic, laminate), gloss/matte/soft-touch lamination, cut to size, same-day delivery if you're in a hurry. Walk-in pickup if you're in the Prati, Borgo, Vatican or Castel Sant'Angelo area. Express courier for other Rome districts.

We don't choose the photos for you

If you want dish photos in the menu, you choose them (or a photographer shoots them at the venue, or you take them from your social gallery). We need good-resolution photos (at least 300dpi at print size): if in doubt, send them over and we'll tell you whether they're suitable before laying out.

We check consistency between the languages

When we lay out, we check that every Italian item has its English counterpart on the same line or page, that allergens are reported identically in both languages, that the "Antipasti / Starters", "Primi / First courses", "Secondi / Main courses", "Dolci / Desserts" sections line up. Common mistakes that sometimes slip past those without design experience.

Pilgrims and religious tourists who want to try Roman cuisine but don't know what cacio e pepe or gricia is. A clear English column describing the ingredients raises the average bill.

Three practical things to know

Timing

From the moment you send us the two already-translated dish lists, we reply within 30 minutes with a quote and two layout proposals. Once the draft is approved, the laminated paper menu is ready at the counter in 1-3 days (for rush jobs: same day).

Costs

The price depends on format, pages, languages and quantity: the more copies you order, the less you pay per copy. For restaurants with seasonal turnover (4 menu changes a year) we set up a saved template that greatly reduces the cost of later reprints. Ask us for a quote.

Updates

At the first print run we set up your venue's template (fonts, colours, layout, bilingual sections). From then on you send us only the updated list in both languages: we replace only the dishes that change, the layout stays the same, and you print it faster.

Frequently asked questions

Do you translate the menu, or do I bring it already translated?
You bring it already translated. You prepare the translation, or a trusted native-speaker translator does: translating Italian cuisine takes specific expertise (gricia, carbonara, guanciale, cacio e pepe are not things Google Translate handles well). We take the two lists — Italian and English — and lay them out consistently, aligned, with allergens and prices in the same position. If you'd like advice on who to use, we can point you to translators who regularly work with restaurants in the historic centre.
In how many languages can I make the menu?
In as many as you need. The most requested combination is Italian + English. For venues in very high tourist-traffic areas (Vatican, Trevi, Pantheon, Trastevere) we also do Italian + English + Spanish, French, German or, on request, Chinese and Russian. More languages = a more complex layout (3-4 columns or a folded booklet), but it's feasible.
Do I have to show allergens in the English version too?
Yes, it's a legal requirement. EU Regulation 1169/2011 obliges every food business in the European Union to show allergens clearly and visibly for each dish. If you have an English version of the menu, the allergens must be shown there too. In our layout allergens are reported identically in both languages (or with universal symbols under each dish, which is the cleanest solution).
Why not a QR-code digital menu?
The digital menu (Menutech, Dishcovery, Stello, Qromo) works very well for certain venues, especially osterias with dishes that change every day. For restaurants with a more stable menu, the laminated bilingual paper menu remains more comfortable for the customer: no Wi-Fi to ask for, no dead battery, no difficulty reading the screen for those whose eyesight isn't perfect. They're not in competition: many restaurants use both, paper for those who prefer it + QR for those who want digital.
How long does it take to print a bilingual menu from scratch?
From when both already-translated lists reach us: 1-3 days for the first job (layout + draft + printing + lamination). For seasonal updates to a bilingual menu already set up with your template (price changes, new translated dishes) we work same-day: send us the message in the morning, pick up the laminated menu in the afternoon. For true rush jobs (venue opening tomorrow, weekend event, a tour group arriving at the last minute) we can also work same-day on new menus, with a small surcharge for priority.
How does pickup work if I'm in the historic centre?
For restaurants in the Prati, Borgo, Vatican, Castel Sant'Angelo, Lungotevere, Cola di Rienzo, Piazza Cavour area (within 1-2 km of our shop) walk-in pickup is the fastest option: in a few minutes you're at the counter, no waiting for the courier, no shipping cost. For other central Rome districts (Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori, Trastevere, Piazza del Popolo, Trevi, Pantheon) we arrange a same-day express courier. For venues outside Rome, express courier in 24-48 hours.
Can I use the same template for the seasonal menu change?
Yes, it's the way we work with most restaurants in the central area. At the first print run we set up your venue's bilingual template together (fonts, colours, layout, cover, logo, two-language sections). From then on you send us only the updated list of translated dishes: we replace only the items that change, and the layout stays identical. Later reprints are much faster and cheaper than the first.
